Anavarin
As the story goes in Nijmegen, the band that takes 2nd palce in the competition "de Roos van Nijmegen" (almost) always fares well. The young band from Nijmegen, Anavarin, reached this position in the prestigious battle of bands and additionally won the public prize. Now it's up to Anavarin to keep up this good work. The band has made a good beginning by releasing their demo-cd "Morning Haze" in december 2007. This demo contains four original songs that offer a balanced mix of progressive/alternative and stonerrock. Formed in 2005, Anavarin has been described as a 'promising band' in many revieuws. This is why they declared 2008 to be the year in which this promise will be fulfilled and the growth towards musical maturity will be continued. Anavarin has made a fantastic step in the right direction by winning the competition 'Kabaal Regionaal' in the beginning of 2008. Gigs at Kabaal am Gemaal, Huntenpop and Appelpop followed. The songs by Anavarin are carried by heavy drums, groovy guitarriffs, harmonious vocals and well-timed tempo switches inspired by great bands like Queens of the Stone Age and Porcupine Tree. However, influences by lesser-known bands such as Colour of Fire and Masters of Reality are also present in the solidly composed song. If Anavarin's style should be labeled, the most fitting description would be 'progressive stoner'. This might be a vague genre at the present, but lovers of rock in Holland and elsewhere will soon adherently link this term to Anavarin.
